A forum to promote donation of rare blood groups is to be launched here on Friday. The forum, Uthiram,' is a joint venture between American College, Lions Club of ESA and District AIDS Prevention and Control Unit.
The rare blood groups include AB Negative, A Negative, B Negative, O Negative and A1B Positive. Coimbatore is witnessing a high number of accidents with Government Rajaji Hospital alone needing 80 units of blood every day. Uthiram' will form a network of blood donors that is open to students and the public. It will also reach out to the surrounding districts".

Coimbatore AIIMS Hospital Latest Status
As you know, we wrote about Coimbatore AIIMS like hospital in past - click here.
Later, as of today the status is that - it is as it is approved by Central and State Governments. There has been delay only from the operational side. It is said that there is no complete approval from Central government. Even though state government is ready, the delay is from the operational side and Central government.
Though it was said that by 2011 September this project will be completed. There is not much progress again, after the foundation function.
It is believed that this project will happen and be successfully completed 100%, but will get delayed. If the work is not resumed back immediately then this won't happen by September 2011.
Only if the work is started back immediately, we can see something solid by 2011.
Will Central government or the operational team make some changes to Coimbatore sooner??!!
Even in today's Dinamalar paper, this is mentioned and the concern is raised by Dinamalar and question is raised - why the delay!?

Coimbatore Meenakshi Mission Hospital expands to Tanjore also
Meenakshi Mission Hospital & Research Centre (MMHRC) is at the verge of completion of 20 years, is now the largest Multi-specialty hospital in South Tamil Nadu with 650-beds and 25 major specialities.
Meenakshi Mission Hospital & Research Centre (MMHRC) was a dream come true for Dr N Sethuraman, its Founder Chairman. The hospital kicked off with 100 beds in 1990 solely relying on its flagship department - the Urology department - and few other specialities. The hospital, at the verge of completion of 20 years, is now the largest Multi-specialty hospital in South Tamil Nadu with 650-beds and 25 major specialities.
So far the hospital had been a Coimbatore based hospital and the hospital has plans for expansion to Tanjore with a 250 bed facility also.
On a side note, there are TV advertisements for the hospital, that shows the corporate efforts on its marketing side. Good Job MMHRC!

Sponsored by OruAcre.com
I recently visited Vadamalayan Hospital in Coimbatore, for my mother. Lot of things are taken care in the hospital related to cardiology especially. Inside, it looks like as if I am inside a very big hospital like Government Rajaji Hospital. Patients are very well taken care and it is expensive for sure for local people, however people from outside the country or much bigger cities would find it cheaper for the amount of treatment that is made.

Coimbatore an Emerging Health Care Destination - Cheap, Best and Caring
Coimbatore is fast emerging as the destination for quality healthcare. And, at affordable costs too. Patients from as far away as from West Bengal visit the hospitals. The frequency of visits of Indianorigin patients from abroad, from countries such as Malaysia, Singapore and Dubai, is also on the rise.
Advantage Coimbatore:
According to hospital sources, the cost of treatment is less in Coimbatore. A heart surgery is done just for Rs.1.25 lakhs, whereas, at Chennai, the same is done for Rs.2.5 lakhs. While an Angiogram is performed for Rs.13,500, the same costs Rs.30,000 in Bengaluru . In addition, there is a human touch and personalized service by senior doctors throughout. Major portion of the cost, anywhere is spent by patients on purchase of medicine but there is a definite 30% to 40% operational cost advantage to the patients at Coimbatore, the sources vouch.
Connectivity:
The increase in the flow of patients is attributed to the improving connectivity to the city through road and rail. The moment the Airport here becomes an international airport, which is planned soon, Coimbatore could as well combine healthcare and tourism in a significant measure, says a report from Confederation of Indian Industry. 'We see a good potential. Only thing lacking is an international airport', according to Dr. Pugalagiri Vadamalayan, Managing Director, Vadamalayan Hospitals (VH).
Mix:
The chemistry of the city is undergoing a change and a composite culture is in the process of evolution as the numbers of doctors from outside the State, serving in the hospitals are on the rise. There are quite a few visiting consultant doctors from abroad such as Canada, adds Mrs.Hemalakshmi.S., Chief Operating Officer, VH.
Evolution:
Patients from southern districts, earlier used to visit Coimbatore for treatment at the Government Hospital. The scenario has changed with the emergence of corporate hospitals in the last two decades. Apart from the Aravind Eye Hospital, known worldwide for eye care and Apollo Hospitals from Chennai, there are two home grown corporate hospitals VH and Devadas Multi-speciality Hospital (DMH). The Meenakshi Mission Hospital and Research Centre (MMHRC), a charitable institution is run in a corporate way. The Iswarya Women Care and Fertility Centre (IWCFC), in the nearby Palani, is gaining in attention.
Distinction:
These hospitals have earned distinct recognition. Evolving over time, they have attained and set standards in patient care, academic and research and community development.
